Many Shades of Green Tracks California’s Green Economy

Many Shades of Green: Diversity and Distribution of California’s Green Jobs serves as a companion to, and builds upon, Next 10’s California Green Innovation Index, the green business analysis published in 2008. Together, these publications offer a systematic approach for identifying companies, and the jobs associated with them, that are providing the means for reducing pollution, harnessing clean energy sources, and minimizing environmental impacts. In other words, these publications act together to provide reliable, in-depth information about the Core Green Economy in California.

F. Noel Perry, venture capitalist and philanthropist, founded Next 10 in 2003 with a focus on “innovation and the intersection between the economy, the environment, and quality of life issues for all Californians.” Many Shades of Green provides critical data to help inform citizens of California of the state’s initiatives to grow the economy and reduce global warming emissions.

Many Shades of Green uncovers a new economic growth taking place across the state in the form of business and job generation. Their research has found that job growth in the Core Green Economy exceeded the broader economy from January 2007 to 2008 and over the long-term. From 1995 to 2008, jobs expanded 36% in green business compared to only 13% overall. Just from 2007 to 2008, green jobs grew 5% while total jobs dropped nearly 1%

Many Shades of Green also provides examples of the different segments (energy efficiency, air & environment, recycling & waste) and occupations (electricians, financial analysts, public relations specialists) in the green economy, and shows Californian green job growth by segment and region.
