Karl Heine’s Designer Journals

During his cross-country travels guest lecturing at some of the nation’s top art and design schools, Karl Heine noticed students scribbling, sketching, and doodling in all sorts of notebooks and journals. That’s when his idea for Designer™ Journals was born.

Heine, Principal of Connecticut-based creativeplacement, used postconsumer waste materials in the making of his journals right from the beginning prototypes. The original journals (above) were made with Mohawk Options 100% PCW and chipboard branded covers. When Heine tested out the journals, he discovered that even Sharpies® didn’t bleed through the Options pages. Heine was thrilled.

Heine’s Designer Journals are available in three cover materials — linoleum, leather, and wetsuit — with 33 different designs and colors, wire coil bound and bleed-proof. The materials chosen are sustainable; the interior sheets  are 100% postconsumer waste, the covers are made from postconsumer waste materials and recycled fiber, and the wire coil binding is 90% recycled steel.

Heine says the Designer Journals are “the coolest eco-friendly journal for creativity and design.” We know this: we want one of every color.
