Established in 1935, the architectural work of Perkins+Will includes the Boeing International Headquarters, Chicago’s Chase Tower, 235 Van Buren, and several schools and universities across the globe. Ideas+Buildings is the company’s second annual internal publication, a photographic time line and a glimpse into the future of the firm, containing images of past work and ideas of what may lie ahead. Ideas+Buildings is a Mohawk Show 11 Finalist.

The design goal for the in-house team was to balance text-heavy articles and highly-saturated imagery against minimalistic and neutral covers and chapter dividers. Diana Davis, Co-Editor, Ideas+Buildings / Volume .02, Perkins+Will, says of the design, “Information-heavy dividers of a heavier paper stock provide a wayfinding strategy throughout the publication. The change in page size and weight causes the book to naturally open at each chapter and also serves as a resting place for the eye, bringing a consistent and graphically simplified white space to the otherwise visually-dense content. A UV press printing process was selected to provide for the intensity of color saturation desired by our design team. The team used other techniques such as foil stamping, varnishing, die-cutting, and laser-cutting to bring to life Mohawk Options 100% PC while upholding a sustainable design mandate.”
