Gary Burden On Designing the Neil Young Archives

Posted: 12/11/2009 @ 8:00 AM in Art,Communication,Packaging,Uncategorized

We shared with you here [1] how Neil Young and designer Gary Burden considered the environment when they created the Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 (for starters, they used Mohawk Via). Now we’ve discovered there’s more to the story, and we found it on Gary Burden’s blog. Apparently, working on the Archives inspired this designer to share the story behind the Grammy-nominated box set.

Seeing a designer so enthusiastic about a project that it propels them to launch a website just to talk about it is inspiring. The site, designed by Burden’s son, Jesse, has bloomed into an archive of sorts for this design legend, who has been creating album covers for music icons such as Neil Young, The Doors, The Mamas & the Papas, The Eagles, and Steppenwolf since 1968.

Check out Garyburdenforrtwerk.com [2] to read about the 20-year process to create the Neil Young Archives, Volume 1. You’ll also read amazing stories from Burden about working and hanging out with music legends like Jim Morrison. (And musicians like Jackson Browne tell about what it’s like to work with Burden). Writes Burden, “What you are seeing is the bare bones and in the coming weeks, months and years we will be fleshing it out with more designs, the stories that go with them, and the parties involved along the way…with lots and lots of photos to aid in conveying the experiences I have had over the past forty some odd years of making ‘Art for Music’.

Come back often and enjoy,” he says.

Thanks Gary. We will.
