Janet Shimada founded Cadeaux Chocolates in Seattle in 2007 with the intention of not only living the dream life as a chocolatier, but also to handcraft chocolates that are made with all-natural ingredients. Graphiti Associates Inc., a design firm also based in Seattle, partnered with Shimada to develop the Cadeaux Chocolates brand. Because naturalness and quality are an important part of the Cadeaux label, Graphiti chose to print their gift boxes on sustainable Mohawk paper.
“We wanted packaging materials that aligned with the Cadeaux brand, so the paper had to beFSC-certified with a high PCW content,” said Kelly Pensell, Graphiti. “We chose Mohawk Renewal because it has these attributes and it is also made carbon neutral, manufactured with windpower, and process chlorine free. Plus, it has a great tactile quality and accepts ink well.”
The design, of both the chocolates and the packaging, was based on the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, finding beauty in an object’s transience and imperfection, which is why no two of Shimada’s handmade chocolates are exactly the same. The boxes themselves are modeled after the Japanese theme of simplicity and understated elegance.
